Italy celebrates 150 years as a unified country

For those who want to know more about Italian history, Corriere della Sera’s series on the 150th anniversary of Italian unification is interesting reading.  There are also articles on exhibits and conferences related to the anniversary.

More of the Colosseum open to the public

As a recent article in La Repubblica explains, visitors to the Colosseum will now be able to see more of the ancient amphitheater.  Recently opened to the public for the first time are the subterranean areas where gladiators and animals waited before their fights.  From the bottom to the top:  also opened is one of the highest tiers from which one can see the whole theater and also stunning views of Rome.

Bronzino exhibition in Florence

Around 70 works by the 16th-Century painter Bronzino are gathered in an exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence.  This video from Il Sole 24 Ore is an overview of the show with comments from the curators discussing Bronzino’s art in context and also some recently attributed paintings.  The show is on view at Palazzo Strozzi until January 23 2011 .

Rome by night

An article from Il Sole 24 Ore gives suggestions for activities to enjoy Rome by night.  Monuments and museums are open late as are restaurants and bars.  The weather is good in the fall – a great time to be out late sight-seeing!
