Cookie recipe for Valentine’s Day

This is an Italian recipe (see a version in English) for Baci di dama or “ladies’ kisses” – classic cookies originally from Piemonte.  Two cookies are sandwiched together with a chocolate filling, hence the name.  This delicious dolce is perfect with an espresso.

Arcimboldo at Palazzo Reale in Milano

Milan’s Palazzo Reale is hosting an exhibition dedicated to the 16th Century painter Arcimboldo. This article from Corriere della Sera discusses the bizarre portraits – heads made of animals, fruit and vegetables – that were characteristic of the Milanese painter.  The article notes that the viewer is both attracted and repulsed by these caricatures that are reminiscent of Leonardo’s grotteschi. The show highlights Arcimboldo’s historical role and also his talent and boldness.

Massimo Bottura of Modena named best chef in the world

This article from Il Sole 24 Ore notes that Massimo Bottura, chef of the Osteria Francescana in Modena was named best chef in the world by the French International Academy of Cuisine.  The Academy stated that Bottura’s cooking melds tradition, science and art perfectly.  His restaurant already had two Michelin stars and was in first place in the Espresso’s 2011 guide to the best restaurants in Italy.

Sponsor for restoration of Rome’s Piramide

According to this article in La Repubblica a Japanese company will sponsor the restoration and cleaning of Rome’s Piramide Cestia.  The structure will be repaired and reinforced and a new entrance for visitors will be set up.  This follows the news that the Tods company will be paying for the costly restoration of the Colosseum.  The article notes that given the precarious state of many monuments and the lack of government funding to maintain them, many more such sponsors will be needed in the coming months and years.
