Sponsor for restoration of Rome’s Piramide

According to this article in La Repubblica a Japanese company will sponsor the restoration and cleaning of Rome’s Piramide Cestia.  The structure will be repaired and reinforced and a new entrance for visitors will be set up.  This follows the news that the Tods company will be paying for the costly restoration of the Colosseum.  The article notes that given the precarious state of many monuments and the lack of government funding to maintain them, many more such sponsors will be needed in the coming months and years.

A change in Italy: Italian movies doing well at the box office

Il Sole 24 Ore says that there is a noticeable change at the Italian box office:  usually the best-selling movies are foreign, particularly American, and Italian movies don’t do well.  Now, however, the movies that are registering the highest ticket sales are Italian.  Over the holiday period the usual comedies (cinepanettoni) sold well and now the satirical comedy “Qualunquemente” is at the top of box office sales followed by the rom-com “Immaturi” and the crime drama “Vallanzasca – gli angeli del male.”  It will be interesting to see if this trend continues with the movie-going public.

I Sodi – Tuscan fare in the Village

This small restaurant on Christopher Street is fabulous.  The food is great:  the meat lasagna wasn’t remotely heavy, the spezzatino was delicious, the Cornish game hen perfectly marinated and cooked, the salads and sides creative and excellent.  The owner’s olive oil from near Florence was wonderful – and we’re picky about olive oil.  There’s also an interesting wine list and the service is efficient and friendly.  A great find.
